Mission Statement
 
The Mission of the Zapata County Juvenile Probation Department is to intervene in the lives of children placed under probation supervision by the Juvenile Court and to provide services that are intended to rehabilitate and prevent further penetration into the Juvenile Justice System. Through its staff and programs, the Juvenile Probation Department will encourage family support and endeavor to keep children in their own community, whenever possible. Each child and his/her family will be treated with respect and dignity while clear expectations for acceptable behaviors are given.
 
All services will be provided equally, with no regard given to race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, sexual orientation, or color.

A juvenile probation officer is considered an extension of the court. They are to perform all duties relative to effective and responsible supervision and the processing and rehabilitation of those juveniles on his/her caseload. This is to be done while always keeping in mind the best interest and welfare of the child and of public safety.
 
He/She is to assist the court on any matter pertaining to probation when requested to do so by the Judge.
 
They must also be knowledgeable and comply with all Texas Juvenile Probation Commission Standards, Department and County Policies and Procedures and Title III of the Texas Family Code.
 
The promotion of positive community relations is a valuable component of the position. There will also be instances when a juvenile probation officer will be required to participate and /or speak on applicable programs concerning juveniles or related matters.
 
It is imperative that a good working relationship with the offices of the County Attorney, the Sheriff, County Clerk, District Clerk and other officers with whom the Juvenile Probation Department interacts with on a regular basis be established.
 
A juvenile probation officer must establish and maintain a good working relationship with the Judge presiding over Court.
 
He/She must promote a positive image of probation with the community and maintain a high level of professionalism and moral character at all times.
